So Watt 10 Year Party - Time To Celebrate!

Ten years ago we set up So Watt with the hope of creating furniture that was playful, thoughtful, and proudly made right here in Marrickville (Sydney). A decade later, we’re pinching ourselves. It’s been ten years of making, designing, and collaborating with a community that cares about where things come from and how they’re made.

If you’re curious about where it all began and the values that continue to drive us, Concrete Playground recently sat down with us to share our story. It’s a great glimpse into what makes So Watt tick and why this milestone means so much.

We’re opening the doors wide to our showroom and workshop for a big 10-year birthday party and open day. On Saturday October 11th, we’ll be welcoming friends old and new to see behind the scenes, meet the team, and share in what we’ve built together.

There will be incredible food curated by FoodLab Sydney, a community food incubator that supports diverse local food entrepreneurs to launch and grow their businesses. FoodLab’s mission is to create opportunities for people to share their culture and flavours through food, while building a more inclusive and sustainable local food system. We’re thrilled to have them join us and can’t wait for you to taste what they’re all about.

Drinks will flow thanks to our friends at Thirstville who are curating an All-Austrailian bar menu, and a limited number of special 10-year collaboration brews with local legends Kicks Brewing will be on offer to the early birds. Supporting local makers and doers has always been at the heart of So Watt, so it feels only right to mark this milestone with some of our favourite neighbours.

Of course, no birthday is complete without a little extra fun. There’ll be prizes, raffles, a merch stand, and tunes by funk and soul legend DJ Juzzlikedat spinning on vinyl all afternoon, thanks to glorious handmade speakers from Translate Sound. It’s our way of saying thank you for ten incredible years and inviting you to be part of the next chapter.

So come raise a glass, share a bite, throw some moves and celebrate ten years of So Watt with us. We can’t wait to see you there!

Please register for a ticket here!

Big love from the So Watt Team

Creative Shelving Ideas to Maximise Space in Compact Aussie Homes

Creative Shelving Ideas to Maximise Space in Compact Aussie Homes

Whether you’re living in a compact apartment, a reimagined heritage home, or a cleverly planned urban dwelling, space is often at a premium in many Australian homes. But smaller does not mean compromise. With thoughtful shelving, even the most modest footprint can feel open, calm, and beautifully functional.

Good shelving does more than store things. It defines zones, adds character, and transforms underused nooks into highly practical spaces. When floor area is limited, vertical solutions become essential. That is where clever, well-considered shelving comes in.

This guide explores practical, design-forward shelving ideas for small space living from wall-mounted and open shelves to modular crates and pegboard systems. For more inspiration across the full range of home and workspace storage, visit the main collection.

Pegboards: A Wall’s Best Friend in a Small Home

Pegboards: A Wall’s Best Friend in a Small Home

When floor space is limited, walls become your most valuable asset. That’s where pegboards come in: modular, unobtrusive, and surprisingly versatile. Whether you need to store tools, keys, bags, books, or kitchen essentials, pegboards easily adapt to the rhythm of daily life.

In small homes, they work beautifully as both storage and display. Mount one by the front door for a catch-all entry station, install a few in the kitchen for spice jars and utensils, or position one above your desk for rotating inspiration. Their layout is easy to update over time by simply shifting shelves and pegs around as your needs change.

You can choose a warm, tactile plywood finish for a natural look, or go for something bolder like the recycled plastic shelf in our speckle finish. Made from repurposed bottle tops, the speckle adds texture and colour without overwhelming a small space.

Wall-Mounted Shelving: Flexible and Functional

Wall-Mounted Shelving: Flexible and Functional

When floor space is at a premium, your walls start doing double duty. Wall-mounted shelving offers a smart and visually light solution for compact homes, especially when arranged in clusters or layered vertically. These pieces act like functional sculpture — practical enough to store your everyday items, yet open enough to keep things feeling airy and spacious.

Use wall-mounted shelves to flank a bed or sofa, build a tidy workstation up the wall, or bring purpose to a blank entryway. For a curated mix of sizes, materials, and finishes designed to work with small-space living, explore the open shelving collection here.

Modular Crates & Box Shelving: Moveable and Stackable

In smaller homes, storage often needs to do more than one job - which is where open crates, cube shelving, and modular systems shine. Use them as stackable side tables, under-bench organisers, or flexible display units that can shift as your space evolves.

Box-style shelving works especially well for renters or for anyone looking to refresh their interiors seasonally. Choose natural ply or painted finishes to tie in with your palette. These types of stylish shelving units can slot neatly into wardrobes, under desks, or along empty hallway walls.

Crate-style storage is available in both ready-to-use and made-to-order formats, depending on the level of flexibility you’re after. For inspiration on shelving units that don’t feel “off the shelf,” check out the full collection here.

Modular Units: Stackable Storage and Stylish Room Dividers

Modular Units: Stackable Storage and Stylish Room Dividers

In small-space living, flexibility is everything. Modular storage systems like the Floyd range are designed to adapt as your needs change. They can be stacked, mounted, moved, or reconfigured, making them ideal for compact homes where every piece needs to do more than one job. Use a single unit along a wall, or stack multiples to create a subtle divider between living and sleeping areas in an open-plan layout.

The backing on each unit adds visual weight, which helps to define zones without needing full-height walls. These units offer practical storage for books, records, baskets or display pieces, while bringing a strong architectural presence into the room.

With a clean profile and solid build, the Floyd system offers structure without adding unnecessary bulk. It’s a smart, long-term solution for small apartments where layout and lifestyle often shift over time.

Shelving in the Unlikely Places

Shelving in the Unlikely Places

Think beyond the obvious. Many compact homes have untapped zones that are perfect candidates for shelving: above doorways, beneath windows, around bathroom mirrors, or even as a ledge in a hallway. A shallow shelf in the right spot can provide a home for keys, candles, plants, or art - without crowding the floor.

Wall-mounted shelving also offers a way to create functional vignettes. A ledge above your couch can act as an evolving art shelf; a run of low open shelves beneath a window can double as both storage and a seat.

You’ll find a range of shelves specifically suited to these smaller moments of function and beauty in the open shelving collection.

Style Matters: Display with Intention

When space is tight, every surface counts - so it’s worth styling shelves with purpose. Blend practicality with beauty: books and bowls, jars and vases, speakers and plants. Group objects by tone or material and leave space between clusters to keep things from feeling crowded.

Shelving in small spaces should breathe. Let air and light work their way around your stored items. A well-styled shelf can do the work of a whole cabinet, especially when you approach it with restraint and care.

Small Space, Big Potential

Smart shelving isn’t just about storage. It brings rhythm to a room, reflects your personality, and helps you live with intention. In compact Australian homes, the right shelving can open up a space, create a sense of calm, and keep the things you love close at hand. It also makes tidying up feel effortless.

Whether you're working with a narrow hallway, a small apartment, or just looking to bring more order into your daily routine, thoughtful shelving is one of the easiest and most satisfying changes you can make.

Start small. Add a ledge, a panel, or a simple stack of crates. Let it grow with your needs and shape itself around the way you live.

The Osmo Experiment

The Osmo Experiment

Osmo’s range of products is extensive and can be a bit of a minefield to navigate, so we spent 3 months testing various Osmo finishes on our Birch Plywood to get exactly the result we were after. We had two goals. First – we needed a finish which would not turn the plywood yellow (no easy feat in the sunny Australian environment!).
