Project Gallery

Browse our gallery of bespoke joinery projects, where we demonstrate concepts for custom built-in storage across kitchen, bedroom, living, dining and study spaces. All projects are designed and made by So Watt using locally sourced sustainable materials. Often our joinery projects are in collaboration with an architect or interior designer as part of larger renovation projects.

Bondi Art-Deco Wardrobes

We all know the older charm of Sydney’s art-deco apartments can bring with it rising damp challenges. In this design, we used our classic offering of low-VOC materials and designed the wardrobes to sit off the walls for a ventilation pocket. Once all the doors and trims are installed this gap disappears to create the seamless full width and height joinery. The window from the bedroom to the sunroom was retained including original mouldings, and our plywood window box inset sat in front of the wonky architraves for a perfectly square portal of sunshine. Integrated handle details were design in collaboration with the client, based on our favourite shark-nose handle cut. A fresh piece of 4mm ply was installed from the back to give a clean finish.

Bed Nook Wardrobes

Fast becoming our most popular project, wrapping joinery around a bed is a fun way to create storage without taking over floor space.
Starting with a bedside table configuration on each side, and including a feature open box space for books and nick-nacks, the joinery accommodates integrated power points and reading lights.
Tall wardrobe spaces are above each bedside table with hanging rails and adjustable shelves for easily customisable storage.
The overhead cabinets run wall to wall above the bed utilising the tall ceilings to leave plenty of open height above the bed so as not to feel walled in. These upper cabinets are hiding a bulkhead but are otherwise full height for storing lower use items like bulky suitcases.

Mosman Kitchen

ABOUT
The key to this project was in material selection to match the existing stunning natural stone benchtop, while ensuring the large format window capturing the view didn’t cause the materials to fade with exposure.
The result is a light veneered timber with plenty of natural variation in the grain to lean into the pale streaks, with black glass doors for the overheads closest to the windows. The sleek black glass is connected to the timber joinery with recessed black steel handle rails.

Laminex IKEA Hack Kitchen

A stella example of our IKEA Hack collection used to create a premium look! This studio apartment kitchen packs a punch with premium materials and finishes where it counts, and lower cost IKEA Metod cabinets internally. The natural stone benchtop perfectly connects the tones in our Laminex Kalamata on Birch Ply IKEA fronts and Cognac stained birch ply uppers. This is finished with our half moon handle style and plum metal backing plate for a sophisticated colour block approach.

Colourful Kids Wardrobe

Designing wardrobes for kids is all about encouraging organisation skills and pride in their belongings. The designs need to be inviting and full of personality but still feel current in years to come. Handles need to be easy for smaller hands to open heavy drawers and doors, and at a height that is accessible. Inside, we include plenty of adjustable shelves to be moved to different heights as needs change. Hanging rails are given a few different heights with pre-drilled holes for the brackets to be moved as children grow.
Drawers are pulled forward and not hidden behind doors, making it easier to open, so that wardrobe doors don’t get left open to access the drawers inside.
In this project, we were careful to build precisely around the skirtings and architraves for a gap-free installation.

Teenager's Designer Wardrobe

Supporting children while they grow with ownership of their space is important. Providing tools for them to take pride in their belongings while growing with them while they develop their unique personalities is no small challenge! This large built-in wardrobe for a teenager offers flexible storage options for clothing and critically includes a desk space that may start off as a games table ready to be the HSC study nook in a few years.  The pop of colour is bold but classic ensuring a timeless look for any creative mood.

Living Room Storage

A full wall of joinery transformed this high-traffic overflow room for a family in Helensburgh. Previously treated as a wide thorofare with a study squeezed in and the vacuum on full display, the goal was to keep the room as open as possible while increasing the storage ten fold and improving the functionality of the home office. Each module in this design is identical in width, which keeps it feeling harmonious even with the change from cupboards to shelves. In some instances the cupboards are double-width internally for the bulkier storage, and all shelves are adjustable. The second desk rolls neatly out from the main one to allow both children to do their homework side by side, with the pesky printer hidden away underneath.

Custom Fenix Kitchen Island

The heart of the holiday home for our Killcare client, this piece was modelled around multiple appliances with plumbing and electrical hidden seamlessly within the steel framework. This was a careful collaboration with plumber, electrician and architect with a prototype construction to ensure the high-end Miele and Zip appliances were installed perfectly. The benchtop is Fenix Blu Fes solid colour high-pressure laminate with framework and aluinium cabinet fronts powerdercoated to match. Millemetre perfect installation ensured all cabinet gaps were correct within the exoskeleton.

Bespoke Pantry

Pushing beyond the boundaries of their small built in kitchen, these apartment owners opted for a furniture style cabinet to double their storage and provide a fun and valuable addition to their biggest investment. Laminex on Birch Ply doors and drawer fronts in colour Burnt Ochre (#196) match the So Watt IKEA Hack plywood fronts for metod cabinets that the client installed in parrallel with this custom pantry. A brass on ply benchtop is a fun suprise when you open the doors, and the shaped internal shelves make the layout more functional.

Petersham Kitchen / Dining

This project embodied a classic inner-west open plan renovation for kitchen, living, dining and work-from-home. A hard-working design, the small space needed to be highly functional for multiple daily activities while offering storage, but not filling the area with bulky joinery.
Successful responses to this design brief include the open concept ceiling hung shelving with no solid sides or backs. This complex feature had to be planned of time with steel supports hidden in the ceiling and cabling run through one of the dowel posts to power the recessed LED on the underside of the shelves.
A favourite area of this space is the dining banquette storage bench with deep drawers that flows directly into a study space.
The kitchen exudes personality and demonstrates a bold and successful colour and material pallet.

Two-Tone Kitchen

A sleek kitchen with bold material and finish pallet demonstrates the diversity of plywood in achieving very different atmospheres. Our classic recessed half-moon handles and visible ply edge fill strips across both spaces connect the two contrasting areas.
Our client is a lover of tea’s, so we created a special tea station with internal shallow drawer made to display tea bags. The bi-fold doors close over this appliance hutch and extra bench space, to continue the clean floor to ceiling look when not in use. The design for this kitchen ensured all the key kitchen appliances and accessories were in the correct locations for a great workflow in this relatively small footprint.

Newtown Kitchen

Quintessentially Newtown, this space is all about drama and creativity! The kitchen is estled among the charred beams of this penthouse apartment, hiding a guest loo at one end and walk-in pantry within the curved ply nook under the eaves at the other end. The custom stain was perfected by the client through lots of trial and error where they could apply their artistic skills, then matched by our furniture paint supplier in Sydney before a final sample was approved. Overall the custom stain added several months to the project but was well and truly worth it. THe benchtop and splashback are from Marblo solid surfaces, installed by a licensed solid surface technician.

Wall-Hung Vanity

Working around the plumbing is the main design complexity for vanity design. For this project we had a centred basin so created a gap between vertical divisions for the drawers to close over. Made from Birch Plywood and finished with water-resistant hard wood wax oils in a clear finish, this four-drawer vanity is topped with marble to ensure the horizontal surfaces are as durable as can be. Enhanced with solid copper handle plates, this piece will continue to bring joy to the daily care routine for decades to come.

Master Plywood Wardrobe

A masterclass in large built-in wardrobes, this is one of our favourite designs. Often a full wall to wall and floor to ceiling built-in wardrobe feels flat and bulky. By breaking up the storage with smaller doors and drawer banks, the single material becomes more dynamic. Hidden shadow rail handles integrated into the cabinets add to the interesting graphic grid lines without taking away from the clean finished ply.
For this particular master bedroom the air conditioner prevented the cabinets entirely filling the space. In the end this was a happy challenge as it allowed for a dresser space where belongings can be quickly dropped rather than put away but still tucked out of sight.
When designing large spans of joinery, it helps to be able to see through to the wall in some areas so that you have a feel of the true size of the room.

Large Family Vanities

Both custom vanities for the two bathrooms in this home worked hard to provide ample storage for each member of the family. Working around the plumbing is the main design complexity for vanity design. For this project we had a centred basin so created a gap between vertical divisions for the drawers to close over. Made from Birch Plywood and finished with water-resistant hardwood wax oils in a clear finish, this four-drawer vanity is topped with marble to ensure the horizontal surfaces are as durable as can be. Enhanced with solid copper handle plates, this piece will continue to bring joy to the daily care routine for decades to come.

Kitchen Island With Hidden Table

New apartments are commonly being equipped with galley kitchens (a row of cabinets along the wall) leaving room for new owners to extend the storage and prep space with a custom kitchen island to suit their needs. In this case, the residents of this Marrickville apartment are keen cooks and coffee drinkers, often heading out on weekends so not looking to lose kitchen space to a large dining area. The solution here was to create a kitchen island with pull-out dining table which tucks away so neatly into the island you would be forgiven for not knowing it existed. Drawers face the main kitchen wall, shallow cabinets on the opposite side, and a fun open shelving unit at the opposite end of the pull-out dining table.

Clear Ply IKEA Hack Kitchen

IKEA Hack doesn't always mean every part of the project needs to be hacked. In this example the client opted for Clear Birch Ply IKEA fronts for the upper cabinets only, keeping the simple white doors along the bottom. The overhang handle style kept everything looking sleek while being uber functional, and our Clear Birch Ply cover panels along the underside of the upper cabinests take it to the next level. The client also made great use of our Clear birch ply cover panels to create two floating shelves at one end of their upper cabinets.

Custom Seating and Table Setting

This luxe but welcoming dining room is part of a large multi-room project for an Architects own holiday home in Killcare NSW. Truly a collaboration between So Watt's design team and the architect, our favourite plywood materials were specified in new ways to achieve a built in banquette seat and dining table. We used knowledge from previous designs to ensure ultra strong construction and repeated this methods throughout the home. Our custom dining table is made with Fenix NTM laminate on ply for the top, and 80mm diametre oak dowel legs. This connects to the more delicate oak dowel legs of the banquette with seat and backrest in veneered birch ply.

Built-in Console and Bookshelf

Our client for this project was an IT specialist who really understood and appreciated tech, but also had an extensive collection of old-fashioned paperbacks to store. The meeting of the two came together in this two-tone concept, built right into the corners of their narrow study space. The client had a lot of fun sketching the layout of shelves around their possesions, and we triple checked all the gear would fit before beginning manufacture. Most of the bookshelf was constructed on site with uprights shared across the fixed shelves to avoid double layers of ply.

Wicks Place Library

New apartment buildings are often a blank canvas, ready to provide the new owners with the space to express their own tastes, and add function where it matters to them most. The new Wix Place apartments in Marrickville are certainly attracting design lovers and creatives, and So Watt has enjoyed crafting bespoke pieces for several apartments already. This buffet storage with bookcase and banquette seating has fulfilled the storage needs for the new owners while helping to define living and dining zones within the open plan space. An injection of colour sits perfect alongside the large book collection and eclectic treasures, lifting the vibe and giving 'dopamine design'.

This collection of custom furniture examples is a demonstration of the versatility of our two main collections, Loft and Stepp. With these two main design concepts that are tried and tested, we can create custom variations of our designs to suit the clients design brief. Most of these projects have been photographed on their way out the workshop door to their new home.

Custom Birch Sideboard

Sometimes its the smallest tweaks that makes the perfect piece for our clients. For this long-time client it meant a subtle shrinking of the Otis sideboard to fit their space and storage needs, then a shift from the richer blackbutt ply to the lighter and brighter birch ply paired with white handle plates. Approaching a custom furniture commission by tweaking a piece already in our collection is the easiest way to enjoy the process and have fun making it your own!

Custom Otis Sideboard

This cute little sideboard cabinet is a riff on our standard Otis sideboard. It was reduced in length for a country home in Northern NSW. The natural colouring of the Blackbutt plywood has a radiance that will age softly as the materials settle into their environment. This unit was built with two drawer showing and one hidden drawer on the right hand side.

Custom Lockers

Building from our versitile plywood Banjo lockers, we created a version that incorporated doors made from a single sheet of Speckle (our 100% post-consumer recycled plastic material). Keeping the doors in the correct arrangement meant the texture of the recycled plastic created a star-burst pattern across the cabinet. When all the doors are closed, its like having a large artwork with storage!

Boardroom Table

Pushing the common conceptions of a plywood table into the world of premium boardroom table design was a real joy in this custom commission for a new HQ in Brisbane. Working to the unrivalled strength of ply, we were able to keep the legs of this large table relatively thin with a narrow upright and wide spanning feet. The focal point of the design is the intersection of the dowel foot rail into the ply leg, which is done with a ‘living clamp’ pinch point often used in traditional hardwood furniture design. The oak dowl beam slots into a specially designed cut-out int the ply leg, which is then tightened with flush mount bolts. This is paired with a double thickness ply top with radiused bottom edge and flush mounted lid to access integrated cable trays The table top finish is the high-performance Fenix NTM Laminate.

Free Standing Wardrobe

Understanding the definition between joinery and loose furniture can be a tricky one, especially when we are commissioned to create a large storage piece to ship interstate. Our built-in joinery projects are assembled in situ and fixed permanently to the space which means it's both safe and fits exactly between walls. Becuase of this we can only do joinery projects within driving distance of our Marrickville workshop. This interstate project based on our Florence Wardrobe only came to life because of our amazing shipping partners Pedemonts, who carefully transported this unit in 4 parts. A handyman organise by the client expertly pieced it back together following our instructions, then secured it back to the wall to ensure it was safe. All in all an impressive collaboration!

Office Credenza

Designed in collaboration with Greenbox Architecture, this custom credenza was a favourite collaboration of ours and resulted in the launch of our Riley Drawer Unit.

We created four 6-drawer versions and one 4-drawer version for Greenbox’s own Sydney CBD office to offer a more considered and designed response to staff storage. In lieu of individual under-desk pedestals, each group workstation has a credenza at the end for the teams to store their possessions. The finished height sits at a comfortable standing desk position so the team can use the area for impromptu team meetings, creating an extension to the workspace.

Custom Pedestal

A sleek set of pedestals were the finishing touch for a law firm in Sydney CBD. Another design that is created from our Loft collection, with the mitred construction and shark-nose edge on full show, helping to break up the sleek black birch ply surface with shadow lines making a dynamic form. Custom folded brass handles are recessed into the top and bottom edges of the deep file drawer and shallower stationery drawer. The pedestal design is completed with black stained oak dowel legs.

Custom Rover Table in Spotted Gum Ply

This custom commission is a great example of the compatibility of our material collection across all our designed pieces. Our client was looking for a special 'forever desk' and loved the sturdy practicality of our Rover Home Desk. Typically made in birch ply with a Fenix laminate work surface, this piece was instead commissioned in full Spotted Gum ply construction, a unique and tactile type of ply which further defined the language of heirloom design intended here. The little pedestal side table made in matching spotted gum ply with white painted birch ply door is the perfect accompaniment yet still flexible for use elsewhere in the home.

Moveable Storage Modules

Commissioned by a private interstate client, this collection of storage cabinets was designed for an open plan home where flexible furniture was critical in making the space useable. All the cabinets are identical depth, with the lower cabinets matching in height that can double as seating. Constructed with mitres but no shark-nose edge in this case, the flat exposed ply edges can sit against each other. The exposed ply edges are in such crisp contrast to the black thanks to a laminate face finish. Lockable castors keep everything in place when being used.

Free Standing Linen Cupboard

The second of three large cabinets shipped interstate for our lovely client, this one split into two cabinets and a serpate base to ensure it made the journey safely. Once it arrived, the pieces came seamlessly together again before being fixed back to the wall. The installed piece closely resembles our Florence Wardrobe without the fragile mitred corners to allow for the modular construction. While in seperate rooms of the house, there's a consistent design language across all three cabinets, with finishes in Cognac (SP16) and Sage (SP04) complimenting each other beautifully.

Custom Speckle Floyd

This little cabinet was voted favourite commission of the year by our design team, thanks to the bold but entirely lovable material and colour pallet selected by our client. This project began with our Floyd vinyl storage cabinet, with the dimensions adjusted to suit the nook in its new home. Rather than the plinth base, this time the cabinet was treated to the dowel leg base typically seen on our Otis or Florence cabinets. The combination of double-sided Laminex on ply in Macedon Mist (#2605) with the clear ply edges and leg base are the perfect pairing with the our Speckle recycled plastic doors and shelves in P01 colourway.

Custom 6-Drawer Buffet

Another subtle tweak of our Otis sideboard with influences from our Riley Drawer Unit, this piece was commissioned by an interior designer for their client. In this case, the drawers were split into six offering each family member their own space near the front door. Subtle decisions like bringing the handles together to form a circle inject personality, and opting for our Cognac (SP16) stain on Australian made hoop pine ply affords the richness without the price tag of the more premium hardwood Blackbutt ply that our Otis is typically made with.

Custom Media Unit

This project evolved from our Clarke Snr. Media Unit and uses construction and style elements from our Loft collection. These elements are the mitred joins with shark-nose leading edge and inset handle concept. For this client we increased the overall size to suit their space, then re-configured the layout of the storage to offer four deep drawers with a central shelving area. The cabinet houses gadgets that need a remote to operate so the mesh door in front of the shelving area continues the language of black internals, while still allowing the remotes to work through the mesh.

Painted Ply Bookshelf

The final piece in this trio of bespoke cabinets continued the theme with the custom leg base and finish in Sage (SP04) while offering an entirely new use. Some shelves are fixed in position to keep the cabinet strong and squear, while others are adjustable for flexible storage. Again, this cabinet was fixed back to the wall once it arrived in Brisbane, but this time the cabinet shipped fully assembled. A credit to our long-running freight partners.

A collection of commercial furniture and joinery projects design and made by So Watt. Commercial projects are often in close collaboration with the client and interior designer or architect assisting them in realising their goals for the space. Commercial designs must be durable and highly functional for multiple different users.

Gelato Messina HQ Exterior

One of the most popular new additions to the culinary mecca that is Marrickville, So Watt were honoured to be invited to produce bespoke furniture for the new Messina Gelato HQ! The exterior furnishings is where the projects creativity really came into its own. Beginning with our Billi stool, we created a series of pieces including a coffee table, straight bench, curvy bench and of course more stools, all designed and built to withstand food fights and sugar crash tantrums! The success of this hardworking furniture suite is really down to the material. Every part of all these pieces is constructed with a custom colour combo of 100% post-consumer recycled HDPE plastic, thanks to our friends at Defy Design! Nothing withstands gelato splodges better.

Gelato Messina HQ Interior

Moving inside the vast and impressive Gelato Messina HQ in Marrickville, you will find a very different atmosphere to the sun-loving exterior. Here it's a more luxe pallet, with our Billi low stool and Billi bar stools alongside custom coffee tables and benches (this time made from high-grade hardwood Blackbutt ply), combined with locally sourced plantation Hoop Pine ply in Crimson (SP10). Moving into the theatre-like restaurant space, a custom Otis sideboard in matching blacbutt ply helps you link the spaces together. This time though, the restuarant features ultra matt black Fenix NTM laminate on ply for the table tops, keeping the language sleek and subdued to ensure the focus is on the culinary creations.

Fibre Cycle Head Office

This fun-filled corporate headquarters achieved the perfect balance in the collaboration between Interior Designer and So Watt, resulting in a cohesive made-to-measure fit out filled with modified pieces from our catalogue to best suit the end user. As an inter-state project, all pieces had to ship to Brisbane and be easily assembled without hand-on install.

The team at Proud Mary Stylist understood the development that had gone into all our pieces, so to achieve this fit out in a short time, they worked off existing pieces such as our Plonk table, Rover Team Table, Pegboards and Billi stools to build the furniture schedule. After enjoying this smooth process, more bespoke pieces followed to complete the space. A fun customisation of our Nora Bench Box was certainly the cherry on top!

Guzman Y Gomez Head Office

So Watt filled the gap between designer and construction team to deliver custom elements for the space that could not be found in any store. The scope included the large lunch table and meeting tables, as well as working alongside the builders to clad large areas of the walls and reception area in timber to match the furniture.

The timber all came from a single source where it had been waiting patiently in an architectural salvage yard for nearly 60 years. It was really special to have all the timber go to the one new home, but the age and condition really presented a lot of difficult dirty work to get it looking consistent across the furniture and cladding.

Girvan Group Planter Lockers

Our custom planter lockers became the focal point of this inner-city open plan office, bringing warmth and texture to an space that’s all about natural light and 360-degree views. Commissioned by Gray Puksand, these locker banks are a variation of our Banjo lockers, modified to include the addition of a planter box, and larger cabinet storage below.

Plywood and other timber planter boxes can be approached in serval ways. In this instance the planter boxes are lined in a pond liner making it completely waterproof and protecting the timber for water and soil. Using pot plants with drip trays allows the soil to drain and keeps the weight to a minimum.

Into Laksa Restaurant

The wonderful crew at Into Laksa in Sydney’s Mascot were really focused on using local brands and manufacturers for their fit out. So Watt were able to supply the bar stools and low table stools within 3 weeks to make sure the space looked and functioned perfectly for the launch of this now-cult favourite laksa destination.

Our Plonk Bar stools offer an intimate and comfortable seating space for indulging in laksa in a calm and relaxed setting. The low Billi stools scattered around tables in the main area encourage groups and flexible seating arrangements to offer quick perches for a speedy lunch. The Billi stools are set up outside during sunny days, the pop of bright colour attracting people to the restaurant.

Western Sydney University

Western Sydney University placed a strong focus on sourcing locally produced furniture for their newly renovated agile staff work areas, which were in much need of some TLC to raise them to the high standard of design shown elsewhere on campus. Our Banjo lockers provided the perfect starting point, making the process easy for the client to specify their ideal dimensions, finish, and preferred lock options. Constructed entirely from laminated plywood in the signature slot together construction style, the lockers are broken up by ply edge grain to transparently show the materials used.

North Sydney Co-work Space

In collaboration with Studio Mae, this multi-level Miller Street North Sydney office with harbour views took co-working spaces to new heights. With a focus on natural and honest materials, this fitout showcases Australian designs throughout and demonstrates the possibilities for more welcoming work environments, moving away from typical laminate and particle board furniture.

Delivering 108 work points across four and six person stations, So Watt designed and manufactured 100% plywood workstations with integrated plywood cable trays at their Marrickville workshop within 5 weeks. The space was completed with loose furniture from other leading brands such as Design By Them for an inviting and clearly custom space.

McDonald's HQ

The arch style of our Billi stool made it an easy choice for interior designers Alkimi Studio when creating an elevated interior for the mcdonalds Sydney head office. The space needed to acknowledge the rolly-polly playfulness of the brand while supporting a fast-paced workspace for a large number of employees.

The Billi stools are easy to move around the space as needed for impromptu meetings or act as side tables at casual seating settings.

SafeWork Staff Lockers

Working in collaboration with creative interior design studio The Bold Collective, we delivered nine banks of custom-made plywood lockers to an exciting multi storey fitout for tech start-up Safety Culture.
This project came together at top speed. Three weeks from the approval of our shop drawings, all 9 banks of lockers were on-site. Being some of the first furniture to be delivered for this project, it really showed the benefits of working with local companies and specifying Australian made design.

Koala Myer Display

So Watt were commissioned by Koala to create an eye catching display for their Myer pop up that met all the strict safety standards for visual merchandising, while reflecting the design ethos of Koala’s brand. The large bookcase concept, modeled off our Watson Shelves, creates a room divider and backdrop for the famous Koala bed base.

The shelving had to be safe in a shop where children might be inclined to climb up on it, so the base is deeper than the shelves to prevent little hands reaching over to use the shelves as a ladder. This larger base also provides critical anti-tip stability. The bookshelves were designed as flat pack to be assembled with an Allen Key so the team could build the displays easily in Myer stores across Australia.

Bowl & Bean

Another commercial project using Billi Stools, this friendly neighbourhood hangout completed their vision with a splash of colour alongside the natural pallet for a simple and inviting space. The timber grain showing through the opaque paint finish in Sage (SP04), ties all the wood textures together and allows café visitors to feel and enjoy the natural texture. Our paint finishes are all commercial grade with a final coat of clear on over colours.
