1. What are the Watson Shelves made of?
To make our super sturdy Watson tall shelving unit we use poplar plywood which has either a black or white melamine layer on both sides. Poplar is a kind of timber which is fast growing and encourages very sustainable forestry practices thanks to the speed at which it can be grown. It is also lighter in weight than most others timbers, making it more economical to ship. We use thin plywood strips to create the criss cross straps at the back of the wide shelving unit, giving them extra strength and adding a pop of natural timber to the assembled shelves.
2. How much weight can the Watson Shelf support?
From a visual perspective we recommend keeping things minimal. The design is backless so that it allows a line of sight through the space keeping things light and airy. It’s best not to fill the shelves with bulky and heavy items as you will lose this lightness. Each shelf can take 10kg which we suggest is spread across the width and not concentrated in the centre where the timber is unsupported. Group your heavy pieces and bundles of books to the ends and leave space in the centre to display smaller or lighter knick-knacks. We are busy designing new pieces all the time, so if you’re looking to load up your shelves with heavy books and record collections, get in touch and we’ll look after you!
3. Will l need to assemble the shelf on arrival? If so, do l need special tools?
Assembling your Watson shelving unit is lots of fun! The only thing you need is a screwdriver, the phillips head type with the cross-head. All the parts are neatly packaged with printed instructions and a QR code to a really fun little video if you prefer to see how it’s done! The whole assembly will only take 10 minutes. THe shelves slot together which makes it very quick and easy, and the adjustable shelves have special catches to pin them in at your desired height, this is where you need the screwdriver.
4. How big is the Watson Shelf?
Our Watson shelves come in lots of sizes, with new options being added all the time. You can already purchase the tall wide shelving configuration, which is a double width that uses three vertical uprights. We also have the tall standard width and tall narrow shelving for smaller spaces. We also have all these widths available in a short shelving version!
