Working from a clear design direction given by the Interior Designers, the brief was to deliver nine banks of custom plywood lockers to a strict budget and tight timeline.
Plywood Storage Lockers
Project: Safety Culture offices, Surry Hills
Client: The Bold Collective
Working in collaboration with creative interior design studio The Bold Collective, we delivered nine banks of custom made plywood lockers to an exciting multi storey fitout for tech start-up Safety Culture.
Being such a large scale project overall, each element had to meet a strict budget. We provided suggestions such as overall dimensions that worked to the best possible economy from the sheet of birch plywood, as well as designing strong joins to allow the units to be made from 12mm thick ply instead of the typical 18mm, a further cost saving.
This project came together at top speed. Three weeks from the approval of our shop drawings, all 9 banks of lockers were on-site. Being some of the first furniture to be delivered for this project, it really showed the benefits of working with local companies and specifying Australian made design.
While the visual styling of the locker design came from The Bold Collective, we were able to offer suggestions on materials and hardware that would make the lockers durable. The hinges are black powdercoated steel, rather than an initial concept that used the shape of the door to hinge inside a rebate. The name plaques are acrylic with a blackboard vinyl layer, which proved to be easier to clean than standard blackboard paint. And the finish is a low VOC wood wax oil meaning our locker banks are not giving any unhealthy off-gases for the workers in this enclosed space.
