In collaboration with interior design firm Conscious Cribs, create a highly functional storage wall to hide daily clutter and show off an impressive book collection. Importantly, the project should be made from environmentally friendly materials and finishes for a healthy family home.
The Library Wall
Project: Helensburgh Home
Client: Conscious Cribs Interior Design
A busy South Coast family home with a narrow communal area connecting the kitchen and dining areas needed some extra attention. The team at Conscious Cribs Interior Design work with healthy materials to transform spaces and helping them to support our wellbeing in the home.
This project transformed typical family clutter into a proud feature in the home, giving the family additional storage and a study space in the process.
Multiple narrow sections like this are ideal for those who fill their shelves with heavy books. There is no risk of sagging under the weight with a smaller shelf span and it gives you more options for internal shelf heights across the whole joinery design.
We love that there are cupboards down low and a designated tall cupboard for the vacuum cleaner. This design really did make daily life simpler.
Being a thoroughfare the workspace needed to remain snug against the joinery. We are often creating custom or bespoke pieces on castor wheels and this project called on this simple solution as well.
Carefully balancing the different work heights with thin desktops and support beams, we were able to create a nested study desk space which can offer one person space to spread out in an L-shaped configuration, or give another seperate study space at the other end for a second person.
What could have easily been a giant mass of plywood was carefully detailed to create points for light and shadow to break up the surface. Inset doors helped to focus your eye on narrower doors, breaking up the shear volume of this joinery. Angled finger pull handles run vertically on the tall doors to keep the design clean and handle free.
The budget called for our Australian Made particle board for the internal components, but the design really needed the textural edge of the plywood to be visible between the sections. We carefully dimensioned the space and accounted for 18m gaps between each cabinet for edge strips to be installed to achieve this.
