Already having a very clear brand guide in place, we were able to offer Koala practical advice on what was safe and achievable in the very tight timeframe. The entire piece had to be shipped flat-packed and assembled on site by Koala team members without tools, all while meeting Myer’s strict rules in relation to safety for customers around such heavy freestanding furniture. It was imperative that all the while we stayed true to the fresh and natural design aesthetic of the Koala brand.
Working within the constraints of commercial fitout safety regulations, the focus was on stability, safety and tool-free assembly.
Koala needed complementary retail pieces that would sit side by side with their hugely successful product range. The pieces needed to hold other merchandising while also completing the feeling of a pop-up loft style home, rather than typical shop shelving.
Entirely cut on our Biesse CNC machine, all the pieces were then finished to maintain the natural pink hue of the Okoume plywood seen on the famous Koala bed base.
The hidden complexity of this unit is in the way it goes together. The order in which the plywood panels slide in together during the assembly is the hidden key to ensuring the unit is locked securely together and a shopper cannot pull any panels out. The horizontal halves fix into the uprights with clever cam-lock Lamello biscuits that lock tight together with an allen key. This helps keep the modules together and the shelves nice and flat across the span.
What We Learnt
During this project we honed our time management and instruction writing skills, as well as our ability to work with different stakeholders on a single project.
So Watt & Koala drank many coffees together and burned through most of our scrap paper. It was an entirely collaborative process between So Watt, Koala and the branding agency employed to style the pop-up space, with many sessions spent on ensuring the piece ticked not only Koala’s needs but also Myer’s.
The national rollout to Myer stores in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Darwin was completed on deadline and assembled with ease by the Koala install team, allowing maximum exposure for the brand during their lease period in the stores.
